Forest of Imagination 2025

Momentum collaborated with Carpenter Oak to develop structurally complex forest shelter in Wokingham, made primarily from green larch and green oak. The shelter was constructed for the Forest of Imagination, an event featuring workshops and art installations for schools.

The frame uses a complex geometry with members and frames all set at different angles. Momentum overcame this by producing a 3D analysis model, which was used to check the stresses and deflections in the structure under self-weight and wind loads.

This detailed approach allowed Momentum to optimise the design and omit two columns at the entrance, creating a simpler design with a more visually appealing entrance.

The design incorporated traditional mortice, tenon, and screwed connections, utilising expertise in oak pegging. Keeping the structure lightweight meant only small concrete pad foundations were needed. This maximised timber usage for a highly sustainable outcome, both environmentally and socially.
