The Harrow School Biology and Chemistry Building provides state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms alongside a 180-seat lecture theatre. It is the first phase in a site wide phased development that incorporates a new Sports Centre and extensive landscaping.
The project required extensive enabling works and site phasing in order for the building to be constructed on a busy school site on sloping ground with very limited access.
The building itself presented various engineering challenges including: retaining walls and basement construction in an area with historic slope stability and groundwater issues, an RC sway frame with flat slab construction, and large transfer structures required over the basement lecture theatre to support the concrete superstructure above.
