IWM Duxford

We assisted Architype with the design of a new passivhaus archive building and large object store at the museum’s Cambridgeshire site, along with supplying structural solutions for the aerial suspension of large display items.

Several of these projects were designed to passivhaus standards, reducing long term running costs.

Through this work Momentum gained a good understanding of the requirements of PD 5454, and have explored structural solutions that incorporate high levels of fire protection and meet the stringent serviceability requirements of roller racking storage.

We also have a clear understanding of the logistics involved in both the moving and storing of existing objects and artefacts.

Client Quote

"The Imperial War Museum have been collecting and preserving the personal stories of people affected by conflict for over a century. To enable collecting to continue for generations to come we are investing in our future by building a new archive store at IWM Duxford. This facility will ensure collections are stored at the environment necessary for preservation and the innovative building design will ensure storage is sustainable by constructing it to PassivHaus standards. We are working with an expert project team who specialise in sustainability and are excited to be working with Momentum, our structural engineers. Momentum are solution focused and pragmatic, they are creative in their problem solving and work collaboratively with the other contractors on the design team to ensure the best possible outcome for IWM in terms of design and cost."
