Momentum assisted with the structural engineering required in the adaptive reuse of a shopping centre unit into a new multi-purpose food, drinks, music and events space.
The existing shopping centre, located in Canada Water, was constructed in the 1980s. Limited information was available and trial pits and opening up works helped ascertain the existing structure and the possibilities for reuse.
Structural design work was carried out in order to minimise expensive interventions and speed up the programme.
Existing slabs were assesses for additional loads from the indoor vertical farm and associated glazed walls and water tanks. The design of spreader grillages avoided the need to break out and replace any concrete slabs.
Steel beams and suspended concrete slabs were altered to form new lift shafts and entrance areas. New plant and services routes were supported off existing structures through back analysis.
