Forest of Imagination

Forest of Imagination is a forest shelter located at a country park in Wokingham near Reading, Berkshire designed for the Forest of Imagination event, an initiative aimed at connecting children with nature.

Momentum collaborated with Carpenter Oak to develop the structural design of the shelter. The frames are formed from green larch timber, with green oak used for the curved braces. The frame uses a complex geometry with members and frames all set at different angles.

For the connection designs, we drew on our expertise in oak peg connections to enable the use of traditional mortice and tenon connections wherever possible.

By minimising concrete and steel and maximising timber, the structure achieves a very small carbon footprint and a sustainable outcome both environmentally and socially.

The shelter is now a permanent picnic shelter in the park, providing a legacy to the event and a valuable community space.
