It was also the inaugural ceremony for our Sustainability Awards, THE MOMSAs.

Bristol Old Vic Theatre has been shortlisted for The Award for Structural Heritage at The Structural Awards 2019. Winners will be announced on the 15th November 2019.

Judge's comment:

The engineers were challenged by the requirement of weaving a new structure between and within parts of a listed building believed to have originated in the 1700’s. Many lines of support from the new structure did not align with the existing substructure, meaning many innovative details were used to transfer new loadings into the original foundations.
The judges were impressed by the many examples of pragmatic engineering judgement which avoided unnecessary structural intervention. The entrance foyer showcases a stunning diagrid timber roof and thoughtful use of timber in the construction of balconies and mezzanine floors.

Quote by sculptor, Matthew Lane Sanderson
“This work of art shall forever mark the status of this place both past, present and future. It is a symbol that not only conveys the beauty of natural form, but the hope we all share for balance in all things.”

Christ Church Spitalfields AJ Retrofit Win.
We’re delighted for Dow Jones Architects who won an AJ Retrofit Award last night for the Christ Church Spitalfields Crypt, a project that we were lucky enough to work on with them, in the category of works to a listed building under £5m.

The judges said of the project "Provocative new elements challenge the existing, though the materials defer, making the interventions on the right side of awkward. Very clear distinction between old and new is a strength of the design, while it also features a strong intervention which is nevertheless modest with a degree of underplay."

RIBA and Woodland Trust Win
Momentum is very excited to have been on the winning team for the new Visitor Hub at Langley Vale Wood in Surrey.

Momentum assisted competition winner Mark Wray Architects, along with SEED Landscape and King Shaw M&E, who were named as winner by the RIBA and the Woodland Trust. The scheme  was judged to respond most effectively to the site and to the Woodland Trusts ambitions, described as an imaginative and beautiful scheme which would demonstrate how mankind and nature can co-exist.

Langley Vale is a 640 acre site in Surrey on the edge of the M25 and near the town of Epsom. The land has been chosen as the location of England’s First World War Centenary Wood1.  The Trust intends to protect and manage the existing mosaic of habitats, including ancient woodland and open grassland. The WT also plans to plant 200,000 native broadleaf trees at the site, to commemorate the efforts of all those involved in the First World War.

The new Visitor Hub will provide amenities for visitors and create a welcoming and exciting connection to the woodland. The hub will enable visitors to dwell on site and raise the profile of Langley Vale Wood as a destination for local residents, day visitors and volunteers.

HakFolly at Clerkenwell Design Week
An exciting installation project that Momentum worked on with Flea Folly Architects can now be seen as part of Clerkenwell Design Week which runs until Saturday 28th May.

The 4.5m tall structure, called HakFolly, has been constructed from Dutch flooring company Hakwood's finished planks, and leftover timber created during floorboard manufacture. The installation creates a wooden tunnel within the arch of St John's Gate - a former priory entrance and one of the last remaining examples of the area's monastic architecture.

Hollow Pavilion, Bristol, now open to the public.
Hollow, an art installation project that Momentum worked on with fabricators Millimetre, is now open to the public at Royal Fort Gardens to mark the opening of the University of Bristol's new Life Sciences Building.

The artist behind the project, Katie Paterson, has amassed a collection of 10,000 tree species to form this new artwork. The samples of wood span time and space and have been sourced from across the globe. From the oldest tree in the world to some of the youngest and near-extinct species, the tree samples contain within them stories of the planet’s history and evolution through time.
